Living isn’t simply sinning

“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.” Hebrews 10:11

Religious duties abound in our day. You would think that living like the world would only mean walking in sin or willful disobedience. Things like drunkenness, sexual immorality, and stealing come to mind. But you would be wrong. The worldly way of living isn’t simply sinning, it is also striving. It is not just disloyalty to God, it is distrust toward Him.

And it doesn’t take someone super-discerning to recognize a person who is trusting completely in themselves—their abilities, their efforts, their strength. It is the people among us (and sometimes ourselves) who live as if everything depends on them. It can even be, sadly, woven into a spiritual reasoning such as service or working hard for God, even though the heart that it comes from is one who is trusting completely in themselves.

This is the nature of works. It operates by a checklist. Some call it a legalist. It’s a list of things people think they need to do to be okay or even be right before God. And the disheartening thing is, this type of living is very prevalent, not just in secular society, but even in the church. It is one of (if not number one) Satan’s most powerful ploys to believers: Trust in yourself. A life of dependence on yourself leads to anxiety because you feel like it is all on you. And in a sense, when we are trusting in ourselves, it is all on us because we have unknowingly forfeited God’s helping hand when we choose to live by the flesh (Galatians 3:10). Whatever you do, don’t rely on the flesh because it will fail you all the time.
