The confidence expressed in Psalm 121 is rooted in the grandeur of the psalmist’s vision of God—the Maker of heaven and earth, the Lord who can be trusted to help us at every point along the journey, through the sunny passages as well as the darker treks through forests of night. The psalmist lifts his eyes to the hills above and sees the One who is not only the destination of the journey, but also the strength for every step of it.

 In spite of all the perils we encounter, the mountainous crags and the desert wastelands, we can trust the Lord. Yes, He is awesome and we feel small and insignificant, but the psalmist assures us that God bridges the gap. He is never too great to care; we are never too small for His caring. The psalm reflects on a God who soothes us in our anxiety and watches over us as a shepherd with his sheep. As you hold your Bible open to this wonderful chapter, you find these important words in superscription: “A Song of Ascents.” What does that mean? There are fifteen of these special psalms, the first of them being Psalm 120.

In those ancient days, the Israelites would travel to Jerusalem for feast days at the temple. Coming from whatever distant town they called home, the pilgrims would make the long journey by foot, walking with their families and friends and enjoying their holiday travel. They were eager for good times in the Holy City, seeing friends again over the feast and making sacrifices to God. Scholars believe the songs of ascents were written to be sung along the road from the lowlands of Palestine up to Jerusalem.

As the travelers walked up that natural incline, the uphill trek to Jerusalem, they’d sing another of these joyful psalms at each new level. In fact, if you read them in order, you can almost see the stages of the journey, moving onward and upward toward the temple, where the people would arrive for the worship of God. These psalms are the music of the uphill journey. We’ve seen something of the historical context. But of course these psalms are alive, not limited to ancient history. For us today, the pilgrimage songs become metaphors for our own spiritual journey.

 Though we don’t often attend sacred feasts in Jerusalem, the road we walk takes us from the lowlands of our present circumstances to the higher place to which God has called us. The songs of ascents contain essential truths for our journey through this life, as we make our way to be with God for eternity. We can quickly grasp their symbolism and find deep encouragement in these little songs.

Si alguna vez hubo un momento en que los verdaderos apóstoles y profetas deben surgir en Estados Unidos y en el mundo, es ahora, no solo para dar palabras proféticas de lo que depara el futuro, sino con santa convicción, para llamar a una Iglesia y una nación de regreso al verdadera adoración a Dios, para expulsar a los cambistas de dinero y para volver a llamarnos a una verdadera oración y ayuno inspirados por el Espíritu, fervientes, efectivos y de carácter santo.

También deben confrontar a las víboras de élite de la iniquidad y advertir a los falsos apóstoles y profetas de sus muros encalados y falsos reclamos de paz, y clamar al pueblo que se arrepienta y regrese a Dios. Buscan más la validación y afirmación de los hombres ante el descuido de vivir y hablar verdaderamente a la vista de Dios. El camino puede ser solitario y difícil a veces, pero nos ponemos en peligro cuando buscamos la validación del hombre sobre la validación de nuestro Padre celestial.

Debemos comenzar a alinearnos con el corazón de Cristo y ver claramente lo que hay dentro del hombre, y en lugar de buscar la aprobación en la carne, preferir a toda costa la aprobación de Dios. Esto nos mantendrá prefiriendo la pureza sobre la popularidad, la intimidad sobre la influencia y la santidad sobre el bombo. Una confianza sincera y preferencia por la aprobación de Dios sobre la aprobación del hombre es lo que distingue a todos los verdaderos apóstoles y profetas de las falsificaciones y aspirantes. If ever there was a time when true apostles and prophets must arise in America and the world, it is now — not only to give prophetic words of what the future holds, but with holy conviction, to call a Church and a nation back to the true worship of God, to drive out the money changers, and to call us back to true Spirit-inspired, fervent, effectual prayer and fasting, and holy character.

They must also confront the elite vipers of iniquity and warn the false apostles and prophets of their whitewashed walls and false claims to peace, and to cry out to the people to repent and return to God. Both John the Baptist and Jesus did this as well as the writers of the New Testament.  Now is the time to flee the existing superficial version of Christianity and our false, unholy allegiances and return to a lifestyle that reflects the humility and meekness of our Master.

 It is an hour when true ministers must move away from the rat race of professional ministry, money-making schemes, and the pursuit of fame, popularity, and media exposure, and be made whole in God’s presence and through God’s love.  Only true friends of the bridegroom whose character has been shaped in the crucible of their own sufferings and earned God’s trust are qualified to lead a Church and a nation back to God. They alone shall know the secret and heart of the Lord.  “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Ps. 25:14).  Notice how this verse reads in the Living Bible:  “Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him. With them alone he shares the secrets of his promises.”

Too many modern apostolic and prophetic voices are tainted because they are too eager for power, popularity, influence, riches, and fame. They seek more the validation and affirmation of men at the neglect of truly living and speaking in the sight of God. The road can be lonely and difficult at times, but we endanger ourselves when we seek the validation of man over the validation of our heavenly Father.

We must begin to align ourselves with the heart of Christ and see clearly what is within man, and rather than seek approval in the flesh, prefer at all costs the approval of God. This will keep us preferring purity over popularity, intimacy over influence, and holiness over hype.  A heartfelt reliance and preference for the approval of God over the approval of man is what distinguishes all true apostles and prophets from counterfeits and wannabes. The same could be said for all ministers and all saints.

For there will come a time when they must not only speak out against the carnal and sinful status quo, but shake off those religious, political, and cultural traditions that run contrary to what God demands and expects of His people. This cannot happen unless they love and fear God more than man. This also cannot happen unless they have an exceedingly great zeal for the honor of God’s house, who we are.

En los tiempos de Moisés y Elías, y a lo largo de otras etapas de la historia de Israel, era necesaria una gran severidad para volver los corazones de las personas al Señor. We see this ministry in manifestation in the spirit and power of Elijah as he stood on Mount Carmel and contested with the false prophets of Baal. The fire fell and consumed the sacrifice along with the wood, stones, dust, and even the water. This mighty manifestation caused the people to fall on their faces and declare the Lord as God.  “Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, ‘The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!’” (1 Kings 18:39)  We also see this ministry exercised in the days of Moses as he stretched forth his rod, and the Red Sea swallowed up and drowned the Egyptian armies.

The results of this anointing and authority are noted in Exodus 14:31: “Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.”  This anointing administered in the spirit and power of Elijah will be seen again and produce holiness and the fear of the Lord in people. Its purpose is always redemptive — to bring forth true repentance and cause the hearts of the people to completely turn to the Lord. We’ve been in the infancy stages of seeing this on a wider scale. This will include a worldwide company of men and women who have been summoned by the Lord to be His messengers.

In the times of Moses and Elijah, and throughout other stages of Israel’s history, great severity was necessary to turn the hearts of the people back to the Lord. Often people quote the scripture in Romans 2:4, properly stating that it is the goodness or kindness of the Lord that leads to repentance, but they fail to read the verses of wrath and judgment surrounding that scripture. When the Lord’s goodness does not lead to repentance, then He is forced to move us into the realm of divine severity (Rom. 11:22).

 Too many people have taken the Lord’s goodness to further their pleasurable, worldly, and even sinful lifestyles and agendas. Too many are building their own ministries today who have little to no godly character because they have never been thoroughly tested or proven and stripped of pride and selfish ambition. Therefore, for the sake of their salvation and the perseverance of their souls, for the sake of their eternal reward, the Lord has to administer His severity.  And so we will see the manifestation of both the goodness and severity of God side by side in the days ahead. Bittersweet times are upon us. We will choose our own medicine. These things will come with great cost and great loss to many as well as great glory and victory to others.

I find the scriptural reference to Jesus as the “Lamb of God” very rare until we get to the book of Revelation. There we find approximately 29 references, more than the rest of the entire New Testament combined, to a lion-like lamb (slain but standing, and what a paradox it is to know of the “wrath of the Lamb” — Rev. 6:16) which delivers victory in judgment in a manner reminiscent of the resurrected Christ. It was the revelation of the Lamb that ushered in His first coming, and it is that same revelation that will usher in His first coming, and it is that same revelation that will usher in the end of the age, when His wrath is poured out. It is only in the Lamb’s meekness and character that we will triumph. With fear and trembling, let us make ourselves ready.

God's invitation is to everyone, but that invitation demands a dedication and a consecration. Counting the cost and paying the price are terms we no longer hear today in the marketplace of Western Christianity, but this language is found everywhere in the Scriptures.  It is time to wake up the sleeping church.

As I heard one minister say, she can be awakened kindly with a kiss or be shaken with the Lord's severity (Rom. 11:22). It’s our choice. If we put it off to the future, it will demand His shakings, which often come in the form of tests and trials and tribulations — or a crisis that will expose our pride and crooked ways. Pure wholeheartedness is what the Lord desires.
